From my supplier: "Apache tears are rounded nodules of volcanic black glass called obsidian. This particular obsidian is smoky obsidian that appears translucent in transmitted light. This was collected from a perlite deposit near the base of Picket Post Mountain near Superior, AZ. This is where the "Apache Tear" legend was born. The deposit is mined for perlite, which is used in horticulture, food processing, and even pharmaceuticals. The obsidian nodules prized by collectors are actually an undesirable byproduct for the miners of the perlite."
